Spurs Spank The Phoenix Suns

Published by chowsquid at 12:59 am under nba

The rivalry between the Phoenix Suns and the San Antonio Spurs dates way back to the days when Fergie was Glamorous .

Nash was not able to handle the love tap from Horry shoulder. That incident lead to Horry’s suspension of two games while the Suns’ Boris Diaw and Amare Stoudemire both had one game suspensions. In the end the Spurs took the series despite giving the Suns two chances to win their glory back.

Fast Forward to 2008 and we have none other than the same two friends meeting up for another showdown. Will the Suns bring it this time?

The Phoenix Suns brought NBA Finals veteran Shaq into the mix; giving them a much needed defense that was always missing in their game.

The Spurs were down by as much as 16 points in the second half while the surging Suns kept rolling. Spurs were so desperate for some offense that they went to Brent Barry from the bench. It almost looked like the giant will get slay today.

But it Don’t Matter, because the NBA Champs are the champs for a reason. The surge worked as Stephen Colbert would say. Spurs came back to tie it up. The game went into overtime and the Spurs can finally exhale. They almost lost at home.

With his team down 104-101, Popavich draws up a nail bitter with Manu Ginobili driving off a pick and roll from Tim Duncan and dishing it to Duncan alone at the three point line. With 4 seconds left, Duncan made his first three of the year. Once again, facing eminent lost, the champ finds within himself the will to not lose? The game went into double overtime to make it more interesting.

Key moments in the double overtime included Steve Nash getting fouled on a three pointed by Tony Parker (fouling out). Nash, a beast at the free throw line missed one of three. Back at

the other end, 95% free throw shooter Brent Barry lined up at the free throw line and made one of two. This opened up a hole for the Suns to crawl through and they did. Nash takes a fade away three pointer in the corner to make it 115-115.

The Suns, thought wisely, to take out Shaq to avoid hack-a-shaq by the Spurs paid the price as the Spurs’ Manu Ginobili drove through the Suns’ defen

se effortlessly for the win. The Suns could not add in Shaq to protect the basket because the Champs wisely did not allow them to call a timeout.

Check. Mate.

If Tim Duncan starts making 3s, there’s no excuse of losing.
