Steve’s reason for the omission is “that Apple is really pitching the iPod Touch as a game machine these days. And to do that, you have to make it as inexpensive as possible.” Nevermind that the 32GB and 64GB version cost $299 and $399 respectively. Nevermind that Apple decided to only put the faster graphic capabilities on the most expensive $299 and $399 versions.

“The new 32GB and 64GB iPod touch models feature improved performance and support for OpenGL ES Version 2.0, which lets developers create games with superior graphics.”

Steve calls a $199 iPod Touch inexpensive, but what he doesn’t realize is how expensive this mistake was on the day of 09/09/09. The Zune HD made by Microsoft is about to launch in a week. The Zune HD has similar features as the iPod Touch except for HD Radio, HD video playback, an OLED screen, and 8.5 hour playback of video (to be confirmed next week). This means Apple could have went for the knock out punch with a video camera but choked instead.

Now iPod Touch owners have no reason to get excited to buy a second iPod Touch with a camera. Only newbies would get excited by today’s announcement of a $20 price break.

Here is the NY Times Article with Steve Jobs explaining how the iPod Touch is a serious gaming machine. But serious gamers and iPod owners know better.
